One of the amazing things about some of the wealth concentration in New York is the quality of the used goods that end up in thrift stores. In fact based on my experience, it’s far easier to find a nice designer shirt or a good pair of pants in a Manhattan thrift store than an ironic t-shirt, which are snapped up by hipsters as soon as they hit the racks. What makes the deal even better is that many thrift stores are actually revenue generating arms of nonprofit organizations that fight poverty, HIV, and other social problems. Obviously there are plenty of thrift stores in the five boroughs, but if you check out West 17th Street or East 23rd Street in Manhattan, you’ll find several good ones located very close to each other.
Another advantage of these stores is that you can bring in clothes or other stuff you no longer use and make it a tax-deductible donation. When you donate and shop, you’re supporting good causes, and you get cheap, high quality goods in the process. So follow the sign’s advice. Become a retail activist!
